Statement / Biography

In my artwork, I find satisfaction in and am intrigued by the concept of color and the depth of its exploration. The human eye is an incredibly biologically advanced and sophisticated tool we are given, making it essential to art by allowing artists (and viewers!) to observe how color interacts with itself and transforms within a composition. To create art and use color to materialize abstract human thought is to demonstrate understanding, not just of applying color, but of critical thinking, deconstruction, interpretation, and concept. Color shapes the world we interact with every day, making it an icon. I explore how the projection and reflection of color, along with the light and shadows it produces, affect form and shape, enabling us to interpret objects. This process of observation and thought creates a desire for exploration. We examine shape, how it emerges from color, and how it is packaged and delivered as a “thing.” Colors interact, fold into themselves, and merge in a single brushstroke or line. These lines intertwine, intersect, and form recognizable objects that we visually deconstruct, identifying their components. If you observe Matisse’s work, one of my biggest inspirations for my use of color, you see symbols and icons created through color’s arrangement and variety. The connection of color to shape is perception and being, and I invite viewers to engage with these beings and perceptions and see color as objects, symbols, and familiar forms, creating feelings of recognition, memory, and feeling.



Sawyer Wiggins was born in Allentown, Pennsylvania. His interest in the art originates from birth, having been raised by two art professors his entire life. He works specifically with digital mediums with influence from media pop culture that he has lived through and seen his entire life, with work ranging from nonsensical adverts to corporate parodies. He is also a painter and illustrator, having taken classes at Minneapolis College of Art and Design, located in Minneapolis, MN and classes at The Baum School of Art, located in Allentown, PA. His father, Brian Wiggins, also influenced his understanding of form and illustration through his own individual mentorship. He had work displayed in a group exhibition, Motherboard: Foundations Exhibition, in April of 2024.

He is currently working on the completion of his BFA at Alfred University.
